It depends how you look at it, Nate. Personally, I don't mind the idea of using photos for promotion, but the hairs in my neck bristle when I feel that someone is trying to steal the photos from me, without my consent, especially if they are trying to do it in such a way that allows them to re-sell my photographs in any way they please.

I guess it's just a different way to approach the issue. If don't make money off your photos, and don't mind if somebody else does, then there's no harm done.

thing is, does giving out a few low res pics for free promotion hurt? at the very least, tossing some shots at contests/websites etc. doesn't seem to be all that bad of a tradeoff it it pans out in the end.

You are completely correct, of course, Nate, and applies in the UK as well. The only thing I'd point out is that letting people steal your copyright in the first place sounds like an absolutely terrible idea.

The way US copyright works is copyright applies to an image, not a subject. an edited image is a separate image (derivative work), which has a separate copyright

i thought I'd add that to my above comment, as European laws may differ from that concept

only upload downsampled pics, and call them a "derivative work" by this strategy, you still own the original, and they only own a low res copy

That UKExpert.co.uk thing is downright scary. Particularly since , as computer users, we're trained to just agree to any licensing agreement that pops up to get it out of the way.

I'll keep this in mind when I'm submitting stuff for contests.
